Аннотация
D.I.Bagaley's works laid the foundation for a systematic scientific study of the history of Slobozhanshchina. The first important step in the implementation of the historian's plan was the publication in 1887. "Sketches on the history of colonisation and life of the steppe outskirts of the Moscow state" doctoral dissertation of D.I.Bagaley. This monograph should be referred to the category of historical-geographical works, as the central issues in it are those related to the field of this science: physical-geographical description of the area, geography of the population, political-administrative division and others. Having given in the beginning of the book a detailed historical and geographical description of the area, D.I. Bagaley then, in accordance with his understanding of progress, depicted how the settlement of the region and the development of material and spiritual culture took place in the process of developing nature and fighting against nomadic Tatar raids, considering it as a natural growth of the level of civilisation.
Published at a time when historical and geographical studies were still few, it aroused great interest in the scientific community, as evidenced by the published reviews. The work was positively evaluated: its author was awarded the prize of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. However, the second volume of "Essays on the History of Colonisation and Life ...", which D.I.Bagaley intended to devote to the history of social and economic development of the region, never saw the light of day. The task was too vast and complicated. Instead of it were published numerous articles and notes by D.I.Bagaley devoted to separate issues - trade, spiritual and material culture, land ownership. All of them were later republished in two separate collections. In 1911 and 1913. "
