Two of the children, brother and sister, are the sole survivors of an air-crash in the Australian desert. Lost, hungry and tired to exhaustion, they face certain death, when suddenly they meet a young aboriginal boy on his walkabout. The two boys quickly become firm friends: the girl is more reserved, and cannot bring herself to accept the black boy's nakedness. But he is their salvation, teaching them to find food, kindle fire, and gradually overcoming the difficulties of language until he understands enough to start leading them towards a town. So for a time all goes well, until there is a tragic misunderstanding and the children are parted.
