In this case history the reader is able to see a situation developing that is somewhat similar to the situation in the second Chapter of this work, that of a pedophile uncle. The difference in this case being the fact that the subject, instead of just living with
an uncle who does not have to account for his actions to anyone, is living with both her uncle and her aunt.
In this case, as in the others, it is the niece who is the instigator of the sexual involvement, however unconscious this action may be. To illustrate this point, at the beginning of the narrative, the subject stated that she liked sleeping naked under the covers in her bed. At the time of the incident when she "raised her head to kiss her uncle good-night," was it an accident or an unconscious wish that the blankets would fall from her chest, baring her breasts to her uncle's eyes?
After the initial interview it was felt that the subject was suffering from latent exhibitionism. Although she did not, consciously, expose herself to her uncle, she did want him to see her. This would also be true for the time in her narrative relating an incident in the bathroom where she was masturbating. She did not leave the door open for her uncle to see in, but she did make it known to him what she was doing by the "funny" sounds she made.
As stated by Morton L. Enelow in Sexual Behavior and the Law:
It is probably unanimously agreed that exhibitionism has its beginning in emotional conflicts that originate in childhood. The actual clinical onset of the disorder may begin at any age or period in life but has its roots and basic origins in childhood emotional conflicts that are carried forth in the unconscious mind into adulthood. The overt clinical disorder at times begins in later childhood as an accentuation or an exaggeration of the normal and ubiquitous early childhood exhibitionism.
That would seem to be the case in this instance* In Linda's narrative, the emotional conflict referred to by Mr. Enelow is the automobile accident that killed Linda's parents. She felt it was her fault although she cannot explain why. She also felt that she could make amends by being extra nice to her uncle, which meant, to her mind, allowing him to see her body. By this time she was almost into her teens and very aware of the human sexual nature. She was a practiced masturbator by the age of ten.
Because her uncle had restrained himself sexually, and because of the fact that she needed to show her body to remove from herself the guilt of the auto accident that took her parents' life, she allowed herself to be picked up at the age of twelve and proceeded to engage in intercourse. It was at this time that she also first experienced fellatio. After learning what pleasure she gave to her male companion, she found she no longer needed to exhibit herself, but at the same time she could only receive complete satisfaction if sometime during intercourse, either before or after, she could fellate her companion.
Although engaging in intercourse and fellatio helped to alleviate her emotional burden, it was not the answer to her needs. In order to experience complete alleviation of her guilt she would have to have sex with her uncle. He being her
father's brother, along with resembling him a great deal, it was only by making him happy that she would be able to free herself from the feeling that she was responsible for her father's death.
Their relationship continued for a number of years until they were caught by Linda's aunt, whereupon she was thrown out of the house. Not being able to continue her sexual relationship with her uncle, her emotional stress worsened.
At the time of the interview, professional counseling was suggested to Linda. She recognized that she had a problem and began to attend group and private therapy sessions.
As far as Linda's uncle is concerned, he was called in for an interview and it was learned that although he had tried to reject Linda's advances, he found himself incapable of doing so. His wife had long ago given up their sexual relationship and Linda's offer was much too enticing to resist. Therapy was also going to be suggested for him until it was learned that after Linda had left that home, her aunt recognized that she had forced her husband into doing what he had done and was willing to put their sex life back on an even keel.
