The preceding case history provides a somewhat different view of oral nieces inasmuch as this particular case deals with the subject of lesbianism, wherein an aunt and her niece are engaged in an incestuous relationship. In this particular history, it would appear that the subject's homosexual behavior is reparative in function, brought on by the rape she experienced at fourteen years of age. Because of the trauma suffered* the subject can feel only abhorrence at the sight of the male body and the thought of heterosexual intercourse.
In Sexual Behavior and the Law, Charles W. Socarides, M.D., states:
True female homosexuality is always reparative in function. Reparative denotes that the homosexual behavior is always fear induced; the anxiety and subsequent damage to the organism's functioning arises from unconscious infantile fears of the opposite sex, childhood prohibitions, fear of punishment, etc. Sexual union with a person of the opposite sex is anxiety-laden and the attempt at repair which inevitably miscarries lies in achieving sexual orgasm by choosing a person of the same sex, thereby avoiding anxiety and fear. Furthermore, a partner of the same sex is the only individual who can offer pleasurable satisfaction. In addition, the organs of the female only are desired, while those of the male are abhorred and feared. Women so afflicted may simply receive the penis with vaginismis or vaginal anesthesia. If the tendency towards orgiastic desires with persons of the same sex is strongly repressed, there may be complete or almost total unawareness of their own homosexual desires and wishes.
With this statement in mind, it is easy to see why, because of one fearful incident, the subject was turned in a homosexual direction. However, bearing in mind Dr.
Socarides's last sentence, it is possible to believe that if the subject's aunt had not been a lesbian herself, then in all probability she would have guided the subject back towards a heterosexual life. This, however, was not the case. Her aunt was a lesbian and this was the opportunity she was waiting for. She was now able to comfort the child with lesbian gestures and intimate touches, strongly instilling in the subject that males were the evil of the world and that only women would be able to satisfy her.
It is also felt that because of the attack she suffered, the subject's feelings of hatred toward the male of the species gave rise to what is termed "penis envy."
In an article published in 1931 on female sexuality, Freud states:
… if a girl clings in obstinate self-assertion to her masculinity we may see that the hope of acquiring a penis is prolonged to an incredible age and may become the aim of her life. The fantasy of really being a man in spite of everything may dominate her. This "masculinity complex" may then result in a manifestly homosexual object choice. She may then develop a "penis identification.' In fact, there are even some strongly homosexual women who consciously "hallucinate" a penis in place of the clitoris in time. In analysis these patients may even discover that they have unconsciously identified their entire body with a phallus.
Interesting is the fact that while the subject's aunt planted the seeds of lesbianism, she was not the one to actually initiate the subject. When asked about this, she stated that although she was hoping that her niece would become involved with lesbian love, she did not want to be the one to introduce her niece to female relationships, nor did she want any of her friends to do it. While she hoped she would be introduced, she did not want to bear the brunt of any guilt that might ensue as a result of her influence.
Keeping to her work, she did not make any sexual overtures to the subject until the day came when her niece initiated a lesbian relationship. Afterward, she did not hesitate to further introduce her niece to lesbian group sex which was to become a staple of her life.
While lesbianism is considered abnormal in our society, the subject of this case history is not concerned with that aspect of her life. She has found, happiness and sexual satisfaction in her relationship with women and is zealously opposed to anything that could possibly arouse a change in her feelings.
