According to the children, the class had been held down in the basement. Tokiko headed downstairs. A cluster of children stood at the entrance to what looked like a traditional dojo.
She went over and peered in. Only a few adults and children remained.
She caught sight of Kaga. He was off in one corner of the room, silently practicing his swing. There was a look of intense concentration on his face, of deep focus in his eyes. He’s off in another world, Tokiko thought.
Kaga’s mind was like an expanse of calm, still water. No matter how hard the wind blew, its surface never became choppy. It was that mental strength that had carried him through the many challenges in his life.
But—
What would happen when he read the letter she’d brought with her? Surely some small ripples would disturb the water’s surface?
Tokiko was curious to know the answer. She started walking toward Kaga.
