In September of this year there was elected the new Chairman of CBB (see about CBB in No2 of NB) - Zhamyang Mytypovich Shagdarov. He was born on 5 October 1949 in Ust-Eghituy: a village in Yeravnin Aimak (region) of Buryatia and was raised in foresteer's populous family. After finishing school he did job of manual worker, then served in the Army.
Yet the young Shagdarov couldn't find in secular life real meaning, in search of which he turned to Dharma. In 1971 he went to Mongolia to study in Gandan Buddhist Institute. In 1976 he returned home, becoming a lama of Ivolginsky Datsan, - and from 1978 to 1980 again resumes study: this time in Nepal, in Ananda Puta Buddhist college in Kathmandu.
In 80s Mr.Shagdarov becomes a Deputy of CBB Chairman - Did-Hambo Lama. Now, being the head of CBB, Bandido Hambo Lama Zh.M.Shagdarov is fulfilling the grand task of restitution of Buddhist Dharma in Russia, striving to develop a network of international contacts with Buddhists of the entire world for this purpose.

3.The St.-Petersburg Buddhist community of Theravada tradition "Boddhimandala" was registered in August 1992. The name was given to the group by Ajahn Sumedho, a spiritual trustee from the Buddhist Center "Amaravati" (England). The community consists of two groups: one follows the tradition of U Pandita, Mahasy Sayadav (Burma), while the other adheres to that of Satya Narayan Goenka (India). Essentially, it is one and the same "Vipassana" practice known in Mahayana as "Vipashyana".
The group is visited by teachers. Thus, Joseph Goldstein from the USA came for three times and led 10-days-long retreats. The average number of participants was about 25, which is approximately equal to the number of the group members.
The practice is based on intense meditation on the Four Foundations (the body, the feelings, the mind and the mind objects), known as the practice of being conscious.
U Pandita's method was brought to Russia by Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Zalzberg (USA), and Goenka's one - by a girl who had passed retreat in Goenka's Center in Bombay. The group concluded retreats, using tape-recorded lectures by Goenka, and had to undergo many difficulties, having no direct contact with the teacher.
Now the group has permanent premises for lectures and retreats.
The group is in need of a Buddha statue about one meter high. We are looking for anyone who might present it to us.

4. In August of this year the "Patibodhana" Buddhist community, belonging to Theravada tradition, was registered in St.-Petersburg. The intention to create an organization, which would spread the true information about Theravada and create the conditions for its further development in Russia appeared as early as in 1990. This very intention has determined the main task of "Patibodhana". For this reason our plans include:
1. Organizing groups for translating the main texts of the Pali Canon.
2.Setting up a library of Buddhist literature.
3. Organizing educational groups.
4. Erecting cult structures.
We intend to cooperate closely with scientists-Buddhologists and scientific institutions of Russia.

IV. International Information.
1. Chinese authorities have given permission to Karmapa's new incarnation (the head of Karma Kagyu school) to depart to India for study in Tibetan monasteries there, which are within jurisdiction of H.H. the Dalai Lama.
2. 21-28 of August the 6-th International Tibetology Conference organized by The Institute for Comparative Research in Human Culture (Oslo) took place in Fagernes (Norway). More than 120 scientists from 22 countries including Russia and Tibet attended there. The programme of the Conference included almost all problem of the Tibetology. The next conference will be held in three years in Gratse (Austria).
3. On 16 November 1992 in Dehra Dun (India) there took place presentation of Drigun Kagyu Institute & Meditation Center. (16 November is the date of Lhabob Duichen Buddhist festival.) The ceremony was opened by H.H. the Dalai Lama.

4. In November the Buddhist Temple was opened in Donetsk. It was sanctified by Ven.Wong Myong Sunim and Ven.Junsei Terasava.
V. Literature (in Russian).
1. In September the publishing house Narthang has issued the autobiography of H.H. the XIVth Dalai Lama "Freedom in Exile". For the first time this book was published at the end of 1990 and since was translated into scores of languages. (price $4).
2. We distribute the Russian translation of "The Buddhism of Tibet" by H.H. (price $2).
3. Also we distribute the book by A.Berzin "The Tibetan Buddhism: History and Prospects". (price $1).
4. In December we intend to publish the course of lectures by the same author under the title "Outlines of Buddhist Practice" (price $2).
5. We can send to our subscribers the illustrated publication "The Story of Buddha" (for children) by H.Saddhatissa, the late President of "Mahabodhi" Society and Head of London Buddhist Vihara. Russian translation by A.Diuranov. (Price $2).
