Mercedes, however, paid no heed to this explanation of her lover's arrest.Мерседес этому не верила.
Her grief, which she had hitherto tried to restrain, now burst out in a violent fit of hysterical sobbing.Долго сдерживаемое горе вдруг вырвалось наружу, и она разразилась рыданиями.
"Come, come," said the old man, "be comforted, my poor child; there is still hope!"- Полно, полно, будем надеяться, - сказал старик, сам не зная, что говорит.

"Hope!" faintly murmured Fernand, but the word seemed to die away on his pale agitated lips, and a convulsive spasm passed over his countenance."Будем надеяться!" - хотел сказать Фернан, но слова застряли у него в горле, только губы беззвучно шевелились.
"Good news! good news!" shouted forth one of the party stationed in the balcony on the lookout.- Господа! - закричал один из гостей, стороживший на галерее. - Господа, карета!

Mercedes and the old man rushed to meet the shipowner and greeted him at the door.Мерседес и старик отец бросились навстречу арматору. Они столкнулись в дверях.
He was very pale.Моррель был очень бледен.
"What news?" exclaimed a general burst of voices.- Ну что? - спросили они в один голос.
"Alas, my friends," replied M. Morrel, with a mournful shake of his head, "the thing has assumed a more serious aspect than I expected."- Друзья мои! - отвечал арматор, качая головой. -Дело оказалось гораздо серьезнее, чем мы думали.
"Oh, indeed-indeed, sir, he is innocent!" sobbed forth Mercedes.- О, господин Моррель! - вскричала Мерседес. -Он невиновен!
"That I believe!" answered M. Morrel; "but still he is charged"-- Я в этом убежден, - отвечал Моррель, - но его обвиняют...
"With what?" inquired the elder Dantes.- В чем же? - спросил старик Дантес.
"With being an agent of the Bonapartist faction!"- В том, что он бонапартистский агент.

A despairing cry escaped the pale lips of Mercedes; the old man sank into a chair.Мерседес вскрикнула; старик упал на стул.
"Ah, Danglars!" whispered Caderousse, "you have deceived me-the trick you spoke of last night has been played; but I cannot suffer a poor old man or an innocent girl to die of grief through your fault. I am determined to tell them all about it."- Все-таки, - прошептал Кадрусс, - вы меня обманули, Данглар, и шутка сыграна; но я не хочу, чтобы бедный старик и невеста умерли с горя, я сейчас же расскажу им все.
"Be silent, you simpleton!" cried Danglars, grasping him by the arm, "or I will not answer even for your own safety.- Молчи, несчастный! - крикнул Данглар, хватая его за руку. - Молчи, если тебе дорога жизнь.
