В ту пору, когда некий рижский удалец оседлал петуха на шпиле церкви Петра (правда, не того, который красуется там сейчас) и осушил на нем кубок вина, представление о границах Риги было совсем иным, чем теперь. Ведь в первой половине XVIII века город сделал лишь первые шаги за черту старинной крепостной стены; нынешние же границы Риги отодвинуты далеко от центра. Гостеприимный город как бы вышел навстречу своим гостям.
