The artillery battalion was the I./Art.Rgt. 108, which had been supporting the Grossdeutschland Division. See XI. A.K. Ia Tagesmeldung, in Anlagen zum KTB AOK 8 Ia, T312, R66, F7584323-4; Kriegsgliederung AOK 8, Stand 28.1.44, T312, R64, F7582625; AOK 8 Ia/Art Nr. 212/44 geh. 24.1.44, T312, R64, F7582982. Note that there is a typing error in the first document; it is said that the unit was I./A.N. 108, rather than I./A.R. 108 as it should be.

The Korsun’-Shevchenkovskii Operation, pp. 128–9; AOK 8 Ia KTB Nr. 3, 27 January 1944, T312, R64, F7581752-3. Note that the Soviet General Staff Study claims that the German defense of Shpola counted up to a regiment of infantry and a training battalion. We have not found any evidence at all of German combat units in Shpola. It seems only to have been occupied by various rear services.

Fernschreiben 11. Pz.Div. Ia an AOK 8, 16.25 Uhr, 27.1.44, in Anlagen zum KTB AOK 8 Ia, T312, R66, F7584303. The three assault gun battalions were Pz.Abt. 8 (one StuG III), StuG.Abt. 905 (ten StuG III) and StuG.Abt. 911 (four StuG III). The Soviet General Staff Study grossly exaggerates the German tank strength, stating that the SS-Wiking attacked from the north with 50 tanks and the 14th Panzer Division with 70 tanks (see The Korsun’-Shevchenkovskii Operation, p. 56). Neither division had that number before the operation began and had not recieved any reinforcements since then. Even if we assume that the Soviet Study actually means all German tank units operating on the 5th Guards Tank Army’s southern flank when speaking about the 14th Panzer Division, it is impossible to reach anywhere near 70 tanks. Also, the SS-Wiking Division was not even employed in this area, its tanks being further to the north; see Proschek collection, BA-MA MSg 2/5648.
