Translated from the Ukrainian by Yuri Tkach, woodcuts by Lopata. A short history of the Ukrainian Cossacks has been included as a foreward to give the English speaking reader background knowledge of the events taking place in this novel. This book is a song to the exploits of the Zaporozhian Army which amazed the whole of Europe. It begins in the spring of year 1629.
