Пунктуация играет для писателя ту же роль, что и анатомия для художника: нужно знать правила, чтобы по требованию искусства иметь возможность отклониться от них. Пунктуация – это средство; ее цель – помочь читателю слушать автора, следить за его мыслью.
И вот еще что. Если все эти возвышенные соображения вас не убедили, то просто запомните, что в реальном мире незнание пунктуации может иметь самые серьезные последствия. В феврале 2003 года кембриджский преподаватель политологии по имени Глен Рангвала получил экземпляр последнего доклада по Ираку, представленного правительству Великобритании. Он тут же опознал в этом тексте докторскую диссертацию американца Ибрагима аль-Мараши, написанную за двенадцать лет до того и воспроизведенную «слово в слово, с точностью до всех неправильно поставленных запятых». Ах, нет. Рангвала заметил и кое-какие изменения оригинала. Например, слова «оппозиционные группы» заменили словом «террористы». Но в остальном текст остался нетронутым. Публикуя свое открытие, Рангвала писал:
В материале Даунинг-стрит[386] были сохранены даже типографские ошибки и неправильные грамматические обороты. Например, Мараши написал: Saddam appointed, Sabir ’Abd al-’Aziz al-Duri as head …[387]
Обратите внимание на неуместную запятую. Британские чиновники, воспользовавшиеся текстом Мараши, ее не заметили. Поэтому на стр. 13 британского досье мы видим все ту же запятую: Saddam appointed, Sabir ’Abd al-’Aziz al-Duri as head …
Итак, игнорирование правил пунктуации способно не только нанести моральный урон, но и повредить политическому реноме. Когда сэр Роджер Кейсмент был «повешен на запятой», мог ли кто-то предвидеть, что девяносто лет спустя британское правительство само оскандалится из-за запятой (причем «запятой невежды»)? Но разве не приятно узнать об этом? Приятно. Еще как.
