Летний сад, который Петр упоминает в своих указах, помеченных мартом - апрелем 1704 года, обычно считают ровесником города. И это, конечно, верно: ведь даже в масштабах человеческой жизни девять-десять месяцев не составляют существенной разницы. У ровесников же, как известно, всегда много общих черт, ибо растут и формируются они в одних и тех же условиях: продуманная простота и ясность, "регулярность" планировки, определившие облик Петербурга, были присущи саду с самого начала его существования.
